2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. To encourage broad public participation in commemorative events organized by the central government and various regions and departments, and in accordance with the spirit of the General Office of the State Council’s notice, September 3, 2015, will be a national holiday. The Development Status and Issues of China’s Pump Industry

China’s pump industry has experienced rapid growth primarily since the country’s reform and opening-up, driving fast development across various sectors. Today, the range and quantity of pump types available generally meet market demand. The industry’s main product categories include centrifugal pumps, mixed-flow pumps, axial-flow pumps, vortex pumps, reciprocating positive-displacement pumps, and liquid-ring vacuum pumps. Among these, centrifugal pumps account for about 70% of total units sold, while rotary positive-displacement and reciprocating positive-displacement pumps together make up roughly 18%. With the rapid expansion of diverse industries—particularly process industries—China’s pump sector has likewise undergone swift growth. Meanwhile, the water-treatment, petrochemical, oil-and-gas, and power sectors have maintained robust levels of activity. Although China’s pump industry has made substantial progress, several challenges persist: disorderly market competition; an incomplete product mix with oversupply in the low-end segment; and relatively low technological capabilities among firms, coupled with weak independent R&D and innovation capacity. These issues to some extent impede the healthy development of China’s pump market. As more multinational pump manufacturers enter the Chinese market, internationalization of competition is intensifying, placing domestic pump companies under mounting pressure in terms of technology, management, and other areas. Drawing on the development trajectories of pump industries in advanced economies such as the United States and Germany, it is evident that China’s pump market will inevitably undergo a wave of consolidation led by foreign-invested (joint-venture) firms. This round of consolidation is bound to eliminate a number of small and medium-sized enterprises lacking sufficient technological expertise and market competitiveness. Consequently, many manufacturers are compelled to continuously upgrade their capabilities and pursue sustainable development.
